The public got its first chance to ride the Dulles International Airport's AeroTrain when it opened early Tuesday morning. The train, which was built underneath the airport, takes travelers from the main terminal to the A, B and C gates. Passengers going to the D gates and international arrivals building will still have to ride the 1960s era mobile lounges. Work on the system began about nine years ago. Previously all passengers had to wait for a mobile lounge to arrive and fill with passengers before being shuttled to their gates. With the AeroTrain passengers hop on and can be at their gate within about two minutes during peak hours. Traveling at a top speed of 42 miles per hour, each car holds about 50 people and their carry-on luggage. After going through the new security mezzanine, which opened in September, passengers enter from the center platform, travel to their gate and exit onto the outer platforms.
